McCabe launched obstruction probe after Comey’s firing

After President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017 but before the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, then-acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe opened an obstruction of justice investigation, two people with knowledge of the matter told CNN on Thursday.

McCabe and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein were both concerned about President Trump’s behavior, CNN reports, and they discussed several different ways they could rein him in, including having Rosenstein wear a wire while meeting with him (when The New York Times first reported this detail in September, Rosenstein denied it). CNN says the FBI had been considering launching the investigation even before Comey was fired, because of Trump asking Comey during an Oval Office meeting to end the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

A Department of Justice official told CNN Rosenstein never attempted to curtail Trump, but others with knowledge of the matter said Rosenstein and several top FBI officials did worry about Trump’s behavior. For more on the chaotic days after Comey’s firing, visit CNN.

‘I was not sent to Washington to play nice’: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other new House progressives are tweeting their dissatisfaction with orientation at Harvard

Newly elected progressive members of the US House of Representatives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley, abandoned their new-member orientation at Harvard Kennedy School on Tuesday night to lead a rally in support of single-payer healthcare, gun control, and laws to fight climate change outside in the freezing cold.

“This is why the Democrats won. This is why we’re in the majority. We refuse to put hope and aspiration and values on a shelf,” said Pressley, a Massachusetts progressive who beat out a longtime incumbent Democrat for her seat. “I was not sent to Washington to play nice.”

On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old Democratic Socialist from New York, protested what she described as the disproportionate corporate influence at the three-day orientation, which is hosted by the Harvard Institute of Politics and cosponsored by the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute and the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Harvard program has hosted hundreds of lawmakers every two years since 1972 and aims to help newly elected officials “forge bipartisan relationships and learn practical skills of lawmaking just one month prior to taking the oath of office.”

One of the Redditors says that he doesn’t think America’s division is between the right and the left. It’s between the rich and the poor, and the rich have attempted to divide the poor into two categories that have artificial differences. He is not saying he completely supports the rich or the poor in this case, but he believes it is the root cause.

The alt-right is really rebelling against the media, not any real decision maker. The left is rebelling against their vision of the greedy rich man that doesn’t care about people or the environment. The right is rebelling against the greedy rich man that attempts to divide and conquer through culture wars. The moderate person just hates the corruption that wealth has wrought on politics and the unethical behavior of large, wealthy corporate entities. It’s all the same.

Trump Personally Employs Undocumented Immigrants? That May Be a Federal Crime

President Donald Trump has long employed undocumented immigrants at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, according to a New York Times report. This arrangement may run afoul of federal law.

A mid-afternoon Thursday exposé identified two of the undocumented women by name.

Victorina Morales, the report notes, has made Trump’s bed, “cleaned his toilet and dusted his crystal golf trophies.” The second woman, Sandra Diaz, no longer works at the golf club but had similar duties during her three-plus years there.

Per the Times:

[Diaz] said she washed and ironed Mr. Trump’s white boxers, golf shirts and khaki trousers, as well as his sheets and towels. Everything belonging to Mr. Trump, his wife, Melania, and their son, Barron, was washed with special detergent in a smaller, separate washing machine, she said.

Substantial media attention has focused on the stark divide between Trump’s personal employment of undocumented immigrants compared to his campaign rhetoric and governing priorities.

“We are tired of the abuse, the insults, the way he talks about us when he knows that we are here helping him make money,” she told the Times. “We sweat it out to attend to his every need and have to put up with his humiliation.”

Aside from the disconnect between the Trump administration’s approach to illegal immigration and the apparent reality at his club, there could be a federal crime afoot here, too.
